Over the last five years, I found myself spiraling in the chaos of what life threw at me, overwhelmed by the pressures of our fast-paced society. Detoxification—the process of cleansing and purifying the mind, body, and soul—felt like an alien concept. Although I longed for some kind of clarity, peace, and liveliness, the road to detoxification was brimmed with challenges. It wasn’t until I reconnected with my Indo-Caribbean roots that I found the light at the end of this gloomy tunnel.
Amidst this confusion, I stumbled across a book: Golden: Empowering Rituals to Conjure Your Inner Priestess by Asa Soltan. The book was about positivity and transforming yourself, viewing yourself as a priestess. While I enjoyed Asa’s conversations about rituals and embodying the best version of yourself, I grew up in a religious community that preached that women were the goddess of their homes. So, in the process of making big strides to change my life, I began to see myself through the lens of a goddess, inspired by the powerful Hindu goddesses who symbolize strength, wisdom, beauty, and change. Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity; Durga, the warrior goddess; Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge; and Kali, goddess of healing and time, each became symbols of the qualities I wanted to cultivate in myself. I realized that to truly detoxify, I had to treat myself as a divine being, deserving of care, respect, and reverence.
Now, I want to share this journey with you, gentle Goddess, in hopes to help you reclaim your power and radiance through Caribbean practices rooted in our South Asian heritage. Together, we’ll explore ways to detoxify your mind, body, and soul, nurturing the goddess within.

Mind Detox: Nurturing Mental Clarity
1. Mindful Meditation and Yoga
Originating from ancient Indian practices, meditation and yoga are powerful tools for mental detoxification. Regular practice helps calm the mind, reduce stress, and enhance focus. In Indo-Caribbean contexts, these practices have been passed down through generations, blending with Western customs to create a unique spiritual experience. Dedicate time daily to sit in silence, focus on your breath, and allow your thoughts to settle. Tip: incorporating yoga asanas (postures) can further aid in aligning your mind and body.
2. Journaling and Reflection
Writing is a cathartic way to release pent-up emotions and gain clarity. Journaling allows you to reflect on your thoughts and feelings, fostering self-awareness and personal growth. Embrace the practice of gratitude journaling, acknowledging the blessings in your life. Blessings you have even bestowed upon yourself! This simple act can shift your mindset, helping you focus on positivity and abundance.
3. Spiritual Connection
Reconnect with your spiritual roots through prayers, mantras, and rituals. Reciting mantras like the Gayatri Mantra or engaging in puja (prayer ceremonies) can create a sense of peace and grounding. These practices serve as a reminder of the divine energy within you, aligning your spirit with the universe. Note: if you do not practice Hindusim, incorporate practices that align with your beliefs.
Body Detox: Revitalizing Physical Health
1. Ayurvedic Healing
Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, offers holistic approaches to detoxifying the body. Do some digging! Incorporate Ayurvedic principles by eating seasonal and locally sourced foods. Use spices like turmeric, ginger, and cumin, known for their anti-inflammatory and digestive properties, to prepare nourishing meals. Chances are you’ve probaby had haldi doodh already.
2. Herbal Teas and Tonics
Herbal teas such as tulsi (holy basil), neem, and moringa are most likely in many Indo-Caribbean households. These teas, rich in antioxidants, help cleanse the body, boost immunity, and promote overall wellness. Drinking a cup of herbal tea daily can become a soothing ritual that supports your body’s natural detoxification processes. Pinkies up!
3. Traditional Healing Remedies
Consider incorporating tamarind paste into your detox routine. Tamarind, widely used in Indo-Caribbean households as an ingredient or snack, is rich in antioxidants and has natural detoxifying properties. Traditionally, tamarind paste is consumed as a remedy to improve digestion and cleanse the liver. A simple tamarind drink, made by mixing the paste with water, a touch of honey, and a sprinkle of cumin, or in traditional dishes like mulligatawny, can help flush out toxins and revitalize the body.
Soul Detox: Reconnecting with Inner Peace
1. Artistic Expression
Engage in artistic pursuits that allow you to express your emotions and creativity. Whether it’s painting, dancing, or writing poetry, art has the power to heal and rejuvenate the soul. In the Indo-Caribbean community, music and dance, such as chutney and tassa drumming, are integral parts of cultural expression. Embrace these art forms to celebrate your heritage and uplift your spirit.
2. Nature Immersion
Spend time in nature to reconnect with the earth’s natural healing energy. The Caribbean’s lush landscapes and serene beaches offer the perfect backdrop for soul detoxification. But if you can’t make it back home, practice grounding by walking barefoot on the sand or grass, swimming in the sea, or simply sitting under a tree. These moments of solitude and connection with nature can bring profound peace and clarity.
3. Community and Sisterhood
Surround yourself with a supportive community of women who uplift and inspire you. Participate in women’s circles or create your own group where you can share experiences, offer support, and celebrate each other’s successes. Sisterhood provides a safe space for healing, growth, and empowerment, reminding you that you are not alone on this journey. Bonus if they are Indo-Caribbean, too!
Lifestyle and Wellness: Creating a Holistic Routine
1. Daily Rituals
Incorporate daily rituals that honour your body and mind. Start your day with a morning routine that includes meditation, gentle stretching, and a nourishing breakfast. End your day with self-care practices like skincare, reading, or a warm bath infused with essential oils.
2. Travel and Exploration
Travel is a powerful way to gain new perspectives and rejuvenate the soul. Explore the Caribbean’s rich cultural heritage by visiting historical sites, participating in local festivals, and immersing yourself in the vibrant traditions of your ancestors. Travel can also be a spiritual journey, allowing you to connect with your roots and discover new facets of yourself.
3. Beauty and Self-Care
Treat yourself like the goddess you are by embracing beauty rituals that enhance your natural radiance. Use natural products like coconut oil, aloe vera, and shea butter to care for your skin and hair. Practice self-love by indulging in regular pampering sessions, whether it’s a DIY facial, a relaxing massage, or simply taking time to rest and recharge.
